In response to the controversy surrounding the names India and Bharat, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said on Wednesday that if the opposition group renamed itself the “Alliance for Betterment, Harmony and Responsible Advancement for Tomorrow (BHARAT),” perhaps the government would stop playing the “fatuous game of changing names.”

What Shashi Tharoor said?

His comments came after President Droupadi Murmu’s invitations to a G20 dinner, which read “President of Bharat” rather than the traditional “President of India,” caused a huge uproar on Tuesday. The opposition claimed that the Modi government intended to drop India and stick with just Bharat as the name of the nation.

We might certainly name ourselves the Alliance for Betterment, Harmony and Responsible Advancement for Tomorrow (BHARAT), Mr. Tharoor said in a post on the social media platform X. Then maybe the ruling party would stop playing this silly name-changing game. The opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) includes the Congress as a member.

Jairam Ramesh, general secretary of the Congress, stated on X on Tuesday that Mr. Modi was free to continue distorting history and dividing India, which is actually Bharat, which is a Union of States. But we won’t let it stop us. After all, what do the INDIA (alliance) parties want to achieve? Bring Harmony, Amity, Reconciliation, and Trust is what BHARAT stands for. BHARAT Judega. “JEETAG INDIA!”

The name “India” has “incalculable brand value,” according to Mr. Tharoor, who stated on Tuesday that while there is no constitutional prohibition against calling India “Bharat,” he hopes the government won’t be so “foolish” as to do so.

Additionally, according to the Congress MP, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, objected to the term “India” because it suggested that “our country was the successor state to the British Raj and Pakistan was a seceding state.”
