The decision of Chinese President Xi Jinping to forgo the G20 Summit in New Delhi has been minimized by External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, who claims that its envoy present at the annual gathering will express its viewpoint. Jaishankar said in an interview with the news agency ANI that it is not unusual for heads of state to skip the G20 Summit and that several presidents and prime ministers have made the same decision in the past.

What Jaishankar Said?

“I believe there have been certain Presidents or PMs who, for whatever reason, have chosen not to attend personally at different times in time in the G20. However, whomever serves as the envoy on that occasion will reflect that nation and its stance.Everyone is, in my opinion, arriving quite seriously, Jaishankar added.

For a two-day G20 conference, world leaders from the top economies will arrive in India on Friday. While India has come up with the upbeat motto “One Earth, One Family, One Future” for the summit, the G20 leaders torn apart by disagreements and strategic fault lines. The G20 comprises of 19 nations and the European Union, which together account for roughly 85% of the world’s GDP and two-thirds of its population.

Both Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin have opted to forgo the meeting in New Delhi.

Premier Li Qiang will lead the Chinese delegation, the Chinese foreign ministry stated on Monday, expressing Beijing’s willingness to cooperate with all parties to ensure the success of the important conference.

Expert’s opinion on this?

Many believe China’s decision to miss the G20 summit in New Delhi is a reflection of the strained ties between China and India. Xi recently came to South Africa to personally attend a BRICS conference, according to Daniel Russel, vice president for international security and diplomacy at the Asia Society.

Therefore, Russel added, “His decision to skip this week’s G-20 in New Delhi is significant.”

The most likely cause, while we do not know for sure, is the tensions between Delhi and Beijing and the seeming hostility between the two leaders. It appears as though Xi Jinping is snubbing Modi when he doesn’t even provide an explanation; this illustrates the tense condition of ties between the PRC and India, he added.
