AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi and his party MP Imtiaz Jaleel voted against the women’s reservation bill in Lok Sabha on Wednesday. They were the only two MPs who were in opposition to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam Bill, which was cleared in Lok Sabha with 454 members voting in its favor.

“The population of OBCs in India is more than 50 percent, but their representation in Lok Sabha is 22 percent. The population of Muslim women in India is 7 percent, while their representation in Lok Sabha is 0.7 percent. So wouldn’t you give them representation?” Owaisi asked.

AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi and party MP from Aurangabad Imitiaz Jaleel are said to be the two members of Lok Sabha who resented the historic bill. AIMIM is a minority party that advocates for the concerns of Muslims.

AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi currently serves as the President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen. He has been elected four times as a Member of Parliament, representing the Hyderabad constituency in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament.

Asaduddin is the third individual to hold the position of national president within the All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) party in India, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.

The women’s quota bill seeks to reserve 33 percent of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women in the Lower House of Parliament.

Earlier today, Owaisi said, “This Modi government wants to increase representation for Savarna women. They don’t want representation for OBC women and Muslim women. There have been 690 women MPs elected to Lok Sabha and only 25 of them have come from the Muslim community.”
