Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh called the Indus Water Treaty a historic mistake of the then Central Government and said that despite the opposition of water experts, Jawaharlal Nehru had given water to Pakistan by cutting the expenses of farmers, which was ended by PM Narendra Modi.

The Agriculture Minister had organized a dialogue with farmers on Monday regarding the Centre’s decision to put the Indus Water Treaty on hold. Farmers from those states were invited to this dialogue who could benefit from the cancellation of this treaty.
In the dialogue, various farmer organizations from Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Western Uttar Pradesh, Himachal and Rajasthan supported the government. The United Kisan Morcha and the Bharatiya Kisan Union called this decision of the Center historic. This treaty signed between India and Pakistan in 1960 has been suspended after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam.
This money was given to Pakistan to build a canal. What kind of generosity is this that we are giving water to those who create terrorists and send them to India. Shivraj Singh said that at that time Atal Bihari Vajpayee had opposed this treaty in the Parliament. He said that we have bought peace by paying money. But Nehru did not agree. Our water was lost and money was also lost. The then President of Pakistan Ayub Khan had said that if Nehru was not there then the treaty would not have happened.
