As an extra measure to lessen air pollution in the nation’s capital, the Supreme Court on Tuesday requested a response from the Delhi administration about its ability to regulate the admission of cabs from other States into Delhi.

A bench made up of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia observed that many of the app-based taxis that used in Delhi registered in other States and frequently arrive in the city with just one person inside. We should also take note of the fact that many of Delhi’s app-based cabs registered in many states. The Court observed, “If we look at the roads, each one is carrying only one passenger.”

The Court has now proposed that, especially during the holiday season, the entry of such cars may monitored to ensure that only taxis registered in Delhi permitted to operate in Delhi. “We would like to know whether there any way of monitoring, especially, during this period of time that only the taxis registered in Delhi permitted to ply as an additional measure to control the pollution,” the court stated. The Court was considering an application pertaining to air pollution in the nation’s capital, in an environmental case involving many concerns.

The Delhi government’s odd-even plan to combat air pollution, according to the top court, was “mere optics” with no real impact when it heard the case yesterday. Vehicles with odd registration numbers on some days and even registration numbers on other days driven on the roads as part of the odd-even plan. “Have you assessed how it performed in past years? During the hearing, the Court had posed the question, “Such schemes are only optics.”
