S. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, said on Sunday that India has used diplomatic parity to compel Canada to remove 41 of its diplomats due to worries over “continuous interference” in the nation’s affairs by Canadian officials.

The extent of the difference between the number of diplomats from one nation and those from the other raises the whole problem of parity. The applicable international law on this, the Vienna Convention, very much provides for parity, according to the minister, as reported by ANI.

However, we used parity in our instance because we were worried about ongoing intervention in our business by Canadian soldiers. We haven’t disclosed much of that to the public. I have a feeling that as time goes on, more information will surface and people will get why we felt the way we did about so many of them.

As a result of the Justin Trudeau administration’s announcement that it had summoned back 41 ambassadors, tensions between India and Canada grew. The pullout occurred one day before of the deadline that India had set, beyond which they risked losing their diplomatic immunity.

New Delhi reduced the number of Canadian diplomats stationed there from 62 to 21 in an effort to achieve “parity” in the size of Canada’s diplomatic representation. Trudeau criticized India for breaking the Geneva Convention. “The diplomatic immunity of 40 Canadian diplomats stationed in India has unilaterally revoked by the Government of India.

All nations in the world should be concerned about it, even if they disagree with the allegations we made about a serious breach of international law involving the alleged murder of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil, which the Indian government may have been complicit in.
