India is the country that purchases the most airplanes globally. The biggest airlines in the country have placed orders for around 1,000 aircraft this year, investing tens of billions of dollars in an unprecedented spending binge in the aviation industry. In anticipation of becoming the second busiest airport in the world after Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the United States, New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is set to welcome 109 million passengers in 2019.

India's Aviation Sector Soars: Record Aircraft Orders Amidst Rail Dominance

This is taking place in a sizable nation that is still mostly dependent on railroads, with 20 rail trips for every one air trip. The massive expansion of aviation, which has attracted a lot of investment, is a key component of India’s argument for improved global recognition. India is vying to become one of the largest economies in the world while juggling its rising middle class’s rising aspirations.

Its airports are among its most noticeable accomplishments. For most Indians, air travel is still beyond their means. An estimated 3% of people in the nation regularly fly for work. But 42 million people, comprising CEOs, students, and engineers, wish to travel rapidly inside India’s boundaries and to have better access to places beyond, for both business and pleasure.

India is home to 1.4 billion people. Growth has been profitless thus far, but Kapil Kaul, the chief executive of aviation advice business CAPA India, believes that “the next two to three years critical for achieving the quality of growth that India desires and deserves.” Indian aviation now needs to demonstrate its profitability. The spending binge should have repercussions for the whole Indian economy. According to Mr. Kaul, cargo follows passenger traffic, and foreign investment usually follows quickly behind.
