CM announcement to Forest dwellers

The Distribution ceremony starts on July 26 and ends on August 15, CM himself distributes pieces of stuff in each ceremony

As the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections in 2024 approaching, Political parties in Madhya Pradesh started sharpening their edges. Trying to target vulnerable section’ vote bank. The government of MP decided to provide shoes, sarees, water bottles, and umbrellas to forest dwellers. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan will kick off this distribution event on July 26 in Singrauli’s Devesar region. He will then continue to attend distribution ceremonies in different districts until August 15th, 2023.

As we know around 21.1% of Madhya Pradesh’s population consists of Tribal communities who rely on traditional timber collection as a means of earning a living. The Vindhyan region has a large tribal population, so it makes sense to focus on them in order to secure their votes. Experts are skeptical about the announcement as it fails to address the unresolved concerns of Adivasis.

Issues faced by tendu leave Adivasis:

Nationalization of minor forest produce: Ever since the government took control of tendu leaves trading, there have been numerous difficulties in selling them in the market, faced by these Adivasis. As they are not getting enough revenue share of their produce. A major portion goes to traders in cooperatives.

Poor health indicators: Tendu leaves collecting Adivasis also face poor health indicators as many tribals are. They became more vulnerable in this case, as most of the women of them are working in beedi making industry where tobacco remains a cause of concern for their health.

Neglect of education: among tribals, there is illiteracy, a great cause of their exploitation by traders and market sellers.

Low outreach of the government policies: because of their illiteracy, corruption, and trader’s excessive rights, they remain untouched by Government’s existing policies and schemes. And Red-Tapism is contributing to their vulnerability.

Marketing linkages are missing: tendu leaves collectors find hurdles while selling their produce into the market as traders exploit them in monetary terms significantly. etc.

What should be the focus point of Government:

The Central government is taking good initiatives in this direction, it tries to develop a link between tribal minor forest produce to the food processing industry, so that forest dwellers will get enough revenue share, and also trying to develop a good linkage between their produce with the market, supports by TRIFED marketing strategies, will boost forest dwellers earning and ultimately their standard of living. Hence the Government of Madhya Pradesh should focus on implementing these initiatives instead of giving small grants. In the coming days, it will potentially be questioned in the name of Freebee.
