The recent release of China’s new “standard map” has sparked debate. Since it includes sensitive territories such as Arunachal Pradesh, Aksai Chin, Taiwan, and the disputed South China Sea regions. The August 28 leak has aroused diplomatic worries and reignited previous issues.

The 2023 edition of China’s official map unveiled on the Ministry of Natural Resources’ standard map service website. The map depicts China’s perspective on global geography using national boundaries, potentially inflaming relations with neighboring countries.

“This map compiled based on the drawing method of national boundaries of China and various countries around the world,” the state-run Global Times said on X (previously Twitter).

The inclusion of Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin, both of which have long been the subject of competing claims between China and India, is particularly significant. Despite China’s claims that it is South Tibet, Arunachal Pradesh has remained an important part of India. India has constantly stated its position. According to PTI, India has often said that Arunachal Pradesh has “always been” and would “always be” an important part of the country.

The scope of the map extends beyond India’s boundaries. President Xi Jinping’s strategic objectives are aligned with China’s declaration of Taiwan as an integral part of its territory. And its continuous pursuit of bringing the island into its fold. This image exacerbates the global worry about relations between China and Taiwan.

Furthermore, China’s delineation includes the contentious nine-dash line. Which claims a large chunk of the South China Sea as Chinese territory. This plan is opposed by nations with competing claims to the same marine regions, including Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan.
