Bangladesh: Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina sentenced to six months in jail, guilty of contempt of court

The International Crimes Tribunal considered Sheikh Hasina statement as defiance and held her guilty of undermining the court. The court said that the punishment will start only after the culprits surrender in the court or are arrested by the police.

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been convicted of contempt of court and sentenced to six months in jail. The International Crimes Tribunal has announced the sentence. A three-member bench gave this verdict on Wednesday. According to Bangladeshi media, the bench of the International Crimes Tribunal was headed by Justice Mohammad Ghulam Murtaza Majumdar. This is the first time that Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to jail in any case.

According to media reports, an audio clip of Sheikh Hasina was leaked last year. This audio clip went viral on social media and was then broadcast by the Bangladeshi media as well. In this audio clip, Sheikh Hasina was allegedly talking to Gobindganj Upazila Chairman Shakil Bulbul, in which she said that ‘227 cases have been registered against me, so I have got a license to kill 227 people.’ The International Crimes Tribunal has also sentenced Shakil Bulbul to two months in jail in the case of contempt of court.

The International Crimes Tribunal considered Sheikh Hasina’s statement as defiance and held her guilty of undermining the court.
