Milkha Singh Dies At The Age Of 91 Due To Covid Complications



Milkha Singh was as Indian track and field sprinter who was introduced to the sport while serving Indian Army. He was the only athlete to win gold in 400 metres race at the Asian Games as well as the Commonwealth Games. Singh represented India in 200m and 400m of 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. In 1956, Singh set records for the 200m and 400m in the National Games Of India, held at Cuttack, and also won gold medals in the same events at Asian Games. He than won a gold medal in the 400m competition at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games with a time of 46.6 seconds. This latter achievement made him the first gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games from independent India. Before Vikas Gowda won the gold in 2014, Milkha Singh was the only Indian male to have won an individual athletics gold medal at those Games.
According to reports, Milkha Singh died on Friday, 18th June 2021 as he was suffering from covid at the Post Graduate Institute Of Medical Education And Research Hospital at the age of 91. His wife ”Nirmal Kaur”, who was 85 years old also recently died due to covid. The internet is bombarded with news of his death as this is a great loss to the nation as he was among the top remembered athletes who represented India.
