Email Marketing is the act of sending commercial messages, typically to a group of people using Email. In its broadest sense, every email sent to a potential or current customer could be Email Marketing.
1. The First Email Marketing Blast Was Sent In 1978
The sender was of name Gary Thuerk who worked for Digital Equipment Corp. His email blast was sent to 400 recipients as a promotion of his company’s computers and it resulted in $13 million in sales. This email is also considered as the first spam message.
2.Hotmail Sparked The Explosion Of Email Marketing
When internet went live in 1991, email was primarily used by universities or for corporate communications. On July 4,1996, Hotmail launched the first free web-based email service. The marketers saw the opportunity and jumped into the market.
3.One Of The World’s Famous Email Marketing Campaigns In History Is Also Considered The ”World’s Largest Spam.
In December,1996, web hosting company Xoom sent an email to 6 million internet users to advertise their Email Robot- an anti spam filtering tool. Also, according to Xoom founder Laurent Massa, the campaign was meant to be a joke. Massa said , ”You hate junk mail, and therefore we are sending you junk mail, telling you to get our free product so you can stop it”.
These are usually triggered based on a customer’s action with a company. To be qualified as transactional messages, these messages’ main purpose must be ”to facilitate, complete or confirm a commercial transaction that the recipient has previously agreed to enter into with the sender.
It involves sending an email solely to communicate a promotional message. Therefore, companies usually collect a list of customers or prospect email addresses to send direct promotional messages to, or they rent a list of email addresses from service companies.
