The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain some fresh petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, saying everybody wants his name to be published in the newspapers. A bench of Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih said it would decide on the pending matter on May 20. After this, the Supreme Court will hear the issue of interim relief in the case.

In fact, on Friday, another new petition came up for hearing in the court, after which Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on behalf of the Center objected to it and said that it is not possible to file ‘endless’ petitions challenging the Act. However, the lawyer appearing on behalf of the petitioner said that he had filed the petition on April 8 and the defects pointed out by the Supreme Court Registry were removed on April 15, but his petition was not listed for hearing. Let us know what has happened in the court so far…
“Everyone wants his name to appear in the newspapers,” the CJI said. When the lawyer urged the bench that his plea should be clubbed with the pending petitions, the bench said, “We will decide the matter.” It then dismissed the plea. When another similar petition came up for hearing, the bench said, “Dismissed”. When the counsel for the petitioner urged that he be allowed to intervene in the pending petitions, the CJI said, “We already have too many interveners.”
On April 17, the Supreme Court decided to hear only five of the total petitions before it.
