Last week more than three suicide incidents were noticed in Bhopal only.
Durkheim, a renowned sociologist, argued in his well-known thesis on suicide that as society becomes more advanced and modern, the rates of suicide also increase. There are various factors that could potentially be the cause of suicide. His theory has been proven right on multiple occasions. Recently, we became aware of three highly alarming incidents of suicide in the city of Bhopal, which has raised significant concerns for the entire community.
Current Suicide Incidents in Bhopal:
A retired mining officer’s wife in Vallabh Nagar committed suicide and left a suicide note explaining that she was struggling with excessive thinking and uncontrollable thoughts. Last week, a 29-year-old girl in Bhopal took her own life while studying for a competitive exam. Similarly, A young boy who worked as a computer operator in an electricity company also took his own life for reasons that are not known.
What these incidents suggested?
The rising number of suicides reflects the harsh truth of our contemporary and ever-changing society. These suicides occur as a result of different factors like mental distress, stress from maintaining a work-life balance, failing exams, psychological anxieties, and health problems. It is important for people to realize that the answer to their problems does not come from suicide, but rather from their ability to fight back.
After witnessing numerous incidents, we are left with several questions. Why do individuals choose to end their lives so easily instead of confronting their problems? Are there no solutions available for their issues? Why are people hesitant to seek assistance from doctors, family members, or the administration?
Where are the stakeholders lacking to counter suicide?
The stakeholders include our family, friends, relatives, government, and society as a whole. All of these stakeholders have some sort of deficiency that contributes to the rising suicide rates. On the part of the family, due to the advancement of technology, family members have been disconnected from each other. They spend most of their time on cell phones and other electronic devices, neglecting to pay attention to the struggles and experiences of other family members. Hence, people lack family support in their tough times.
In today’s society, more and more people are focused on their careers and becoming successful. This mindset has led to a sense of suspicion even among close friends, as everyone is striving to achieve wealth and success. As a result, people prioritize their work over their relationships, leading to feelings of loneliness, which subsequently became one of the reasons for suicide.
Despite the government’s claim of “minimum government, maximum governance,” people are still facing difficulties in filing complaints at police stations and accessing administration services. Additionally, the long delays in resolving cases further added to the suffering of the general public.
In today’s society, we tend to neglect the impact of our thoughts and actions. Fear, anxiety, and biased thinking based on religion, caste, race, and gender prevail, and opportunities are often given based on favoritism, leading to a decline in moral values and ultimately driving some individuals to contemplate suicide.
What needs to do?
We should strive to create a society where individuals are evaluated based on their abilities and talents rather than their religion, caste, or gender. Everyone should have equal opportunities for employment and a conducive environment for their mental health. It is important for people to feel safe and supported by the government in our country.
